英语翻译技巧|“犯罪记录”的译法

Sheet这个词有表格、清单的意思，譬如spread sheet（总剖析表，大全），balance sheet（资产负债表），med sheet（用药清单）等等。同时大家也常常看到cheat sheet和rap^{1 sheet，这又是什么表格或清单呢？}

Cheat sheet有cheat（欺骗），想当然的话，必然会觉得它是个贬义词。的确，cheat sheet原意有小抄的意思，所以字典里的概念是A piece of paper with information written down on it that an unethical person might create if they werent prepared for a test.。然而，cheat sheet的说法已经走出了贬义的阴影，成为简要说明，步骤说明书的意思。比如：

We asked the engineer to develop a cheat sheet for this machine.大家需要工程师给大家弄个简单的机器说明书。

The cheat sheet was attached^{2 to the package of the camera.说明书就贴在照相机的包装盒上。}

而rap sheet的意思则有的不太好猜。rap有不少意思，如轻敲，扣击，斥责；同时rap还指上世纪七十年代在美国兴起的一种音乐形式，即说唱音乐。但rap sheet的意思与以上说法都没什么关系。在美国俚语中，rap还有惩罚的意思，比如：

They gave him a big rap.他们狠狠地教训了他一顿。

Rap sheet其实指的是犯罪记录。比如：

This neighbor of theirs has a long rap sheet. 他们的这个街坊犯过不少事。

I have never had a rap sheet and my record is clean.我从来没犯过事，清清白白。
