Bottleneck是一个英语复合名词，本义是瓶子颈部，但在商务英语里，常用“瓶颈；妨碍；妨碍进度的原因”之义，同同义词有barrier，block，chokepoint。Bottleneck容易见到的习惯用语有bottleneck constraints瓶颈制约/限制、bottleneck problem瓶颈问题、double bottleneck双重瓶颈、development bottleneck进步瓶颈。
企业瓶颈其实就是一种危机（crisis）。企业遭遇见进步瓶颈（development bottleneck），意味着企业在某阶段上不去下不来，长期出现停滞（be at a standstill）或者反复波动的现象。企业苦苦探索变革之道，但事倍功半（get half the result with twice the effort），致使变革本钱不断上升。
