for years与over the years前冠词的有无问题

years 可以构成两个词组：

1. For years: I havent been therefor years.

2. Over the years: The carved ceilings have suffered woodworm attack over the years.

这两个词组意思差不多，都是“多年来”的意思，可是 for years 前是零冠词而 over the years 前是定冠词，这是为何？请问这两个词组的零冠词与定冠词各有哪些用意？

for years 表示一个非特定的时间段，意为“多年来”。比如：

He taught in this school for ten years. 他在这所学校教了10年书。

（这10年不知范围）

over the years 表示一个特定的时间段，意为“经过了这类年”。比如：

He taught in this school for ten years; his strength diminished over the years.

他在这所学校教了10年书。经过这很多年月，他的体力不如以前了。
